Wildfire Threatening HomeWildfire is a fact of life in Western Montana, and Missoula County homeowners have some excellent resources available to help protect their homes and property. The Missoula County Office of Emergency Management offers practical guidance on reducing wildfire risks, including creating defensible space, clearing flammable vegetation, protecting roofs and vents from windblown embers, and making other improvements that can help a home survive a wildfire. Homeowners can also request a free property assessment from the county’s Wildfire Mitigation team, which provides personalized recommendations for reducing fire hazards around their homes.

The county also offers a Wildfire Ready cost-share program that can cover up to 75% of eligible wildfire mitigation expenses, subject to program limits and approval. Qualifying projects may include removing hazardous vegetation, improving defensible space around buildings, and clearing access routes. Beyond protecting the property itself, the county provides information about preparing for evacuation, dealing with wildfire smoke, and understanding local wildfire risks through its Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Whether you live on a wooded parcel outside town or in a more developed neighborhood, these resources are worth exploring before the next fire season arrives.
